When in Rome, do as the Romans do

Early hours of 9th June we drove to Kos Airport and flew via Athens to Rome – arriving mid-morning and meeting up with Jenny + Ian along the way – It was great to catch up with friends + what’s more they could easily speak English !!!

At Rome Airport we pick up our car for the next 6 weeks ( a Peugeot 5008 with 11km on the clock, loads of room & storage for the four of us + a huge sunroof ), and drove into the centre of Rome – the best thing about the car is actually Francesca, the women who lives in the GPS system and who directs our every move with great precision and anticipation – do we love her !!! – except it did take a while to understand some of her directions, like ‘turn half right in 100m’ ( now that we are in France she has been replaced by Marie-Antoinette who is equally attentive )

So, three days in Rome meant a rather hectic wiz around the old centre of Rome, all in reasonable walking distance - The Vatican & The Sistine Chapel ( which is rather amazing + beautiful ), Piazza San Pietro + St Peter’s Basilica ( which is unbelievably huge and was crammed full of visitors ) the Roman Forum + the Colosseum ( which is actually oval shaped + not circular ), Piazza Navona, the Spanish Steps, the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Capitoline Hill + a number of other wonderful churches & sites full of incredible architecture, art and an amazing sense of history – we had a great time – feet + muscles were rather sore by the end, but well worth every moment
